What are ceramides?
Ceramides are lipids found naturally in the upper layer of the body that hold the skin cells together and provide a skin barrier. They make up 50% of skin composition. It is the most important structural element of the lipid barrier and it plays a vital role in the skin appearance.
Ceramide is often found in moisturizers, creams, serums, and other skincare products designed to improve the skin’s barrier function, hydrate it, and protect it from environmental stressors.
How Ceramide works
They are orderly arranged in lamellar form to act as a membrane and fill the intercellular space in the stratum corneum (SC). Apart from the important barrier function, this membrane also controls the cohesion of dead cells, the corneocytes. In dry and fissured skin this lipid barrier is largely destroyed and the skin suffers increased desquamation of corneocytes and high transepidermal water loss. Especially the loss of water from deeper epidermal layers will affect the functioning of the cells which decisively depend on their hydrated environment. Therefore, restoration of the lipid barrier, apart from removing the real cause of dry skin conditions, will also restore the physiological cell functions, thus improving the entire condition of the skin.
Why do we need them in skincare when ceramide is already present in the skin?
As we age the ceramide depletes and effectiveness reduces. Sun damage can also affect ceramide production in the skin. Well-formulated skincare with ceramide can help strengthen the skin barrier.
Ceramide is supported by scientific research and has proven benefits in enhancing skin health.
Ceramide helps improve skin health in the following ways:
- Enhancing the Skin Barrier: Ceramides are essential components of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. They play a key role in forming and maintaining the skin’s barrier function. A healthy skin barrier is vital for retaining moisture, preventing water loss, and protecting the skin from irritants and pathogens.
- Moisture Retention: Ceramides help the skin retain water by reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). This moisture-retention ability is particularly beneficial for individuals with dry skin, as it keeps the skin hydrated and plump.
- Protection from Environmental Stressors: Ceramides act as a protective shield against external stressors, such as pollution, UV radiation, and harsh weather conditions. This protection helps to prevent damage and maintain the skin’s overall health.
- Reducing Sensitivity and Irritation: A healthy skin barrier, reinforced by ceramides, is less prone to irritation and sensitivity. It helps soothe and calm the skin, making it suitable for individuals with conditions like eczema or rosacea.
- Aiding Skin Repair: When the skin’s barrier is compromised, ceramides are crucial in repairing and restoring it. This helps the skin recover from damage and promotes overall health and appearance.
Ceramide is one of the most powerful ingredients in anti-aging even more than retinol, peptide, and niacinamide.
Here’s how it contributes to an anti-aging skincare routine:
- Restores and Strengthens the Skin Barrier: As we age, the natural production of ceramides in the skin decreases, leading to a weakened skin barrier. This can result in increased dryness, sensitivity, and a higher susceptibility to environmental damage. By replenishing ceramides through products containing Ceramide NP, the skin’s barrier function is reinforced. This helps retain moisture, reduce water loss, and protect against external aggressors.
- Enhances Moisture Retention: Aging skin tends to lose its ability to retain moisture, which can lead to dryness, fine lines, and wrinkles. Ceramide NP’s ability to improve moisture retention helps in maintaining skin hydration, resulting in a plump and youthful complexion.
- Reduces Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL): TEWL is the process by which water evaporates from the skin’s surface. Ceramide NP helps reduce TEWL, ensuring that the skin maintains an optimal level of hydration. This contributes to a more youthful and supple appearance.
- Minimizes Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Well-hydrated and protected skin is less prone to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. By bolstering the skin’s barrier, Ceramide NP helps smooth out the skin’s surface and minimize the appearance of existing lines.
- Protects Against Environmental Damage: Ceramide NP acts as a shield against environmental stressors, including UV radiation, pollution, and harsh weather conditions. This protection is vital in preventing premature aging caused by external aggressors.
- Soothes and Calms Irritated Skin: Aging skin may become more sensitive and prone to irritation. Ceramide NP’s soothing properties help alleviate redness, inflammation, and discomfort, providing relief to sensitive or compromised skin.
- Supports Skin Repair and Regeneration: Ceramide NP aids in the skin’s natural repair processes. It helps the skin recover from damage caused by environmental factors and supports cell turnover, leading to a more youthful and rejuvenated complexion.
Overall, Ceramide is a valuable ingredient in anti-aging skincare products, helping to restore and maintain a healthy skin barrier, retain moisture, protect against external stressors, and reduce the visible signs of aging.
