Do Facial Oils Cause Breakouts Or Block Skin Pores

By

This is a common question we often hear from our clients. Do facial oils block skin pores and cause Acne?

Let’s find out whether oil in your skincare routine is a friend or enemy.

As you grow older, your skin’s protective barrier starts to break down. This means that your skin may start to dry out and lose its ability to hold water more effectively.

When it comes to having oil in your skin, it’s there to help keep your skin in balance. Oil can indeed be amazing for your skin! That’s because oil stops your skin from losing water. Your skin needs both oil and water to look its best. The water content of your skin is what makes your skin look plump and juicy. It also keeps fine lines from showing up prematurely.

On top of holding hydration in the skin, face oils work to keep the other ingredients of your routine in your skin as well. Some are even formulated for oily and acne-prone skin. So there’s something out there for every skin type.

Some face oils can indeed cause skin to break out. Your skin naturally produces sebum, a form of oil that prevents skin dryness. Sebum can only cause breakouts when it is combined with breakout-causing bacteria and dead skin cells.

There are many types of oil – and not all of them cause breakouts. Some of them can help keep skin clear. Facial oils are not created equally. Not all oils create breakouts, and not all oils are animal-driven.

Anyone can use face oils; just make sure you’re using the right ones for your specific skin type.

Occlusive oils

Occlusive oils are oils that physically block water loss. They’re found in many skin care products and can cause breakouts for some people. Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Beeswax, Lanolin, and Paraffin are some occlusive ingredients to watch out for. Olive Oil and Coconut Oil tend to clog pores too, but some people – particularly those with dry skin – love using them anyway. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to different ingredients.

Non-comedogenic oils

Non-comedogenic oils are well known for not clogging pores. One example is Almond Oil, which has high levels of fatty acids and can help moisturize dry skin.

Plant-Based Oils

Lightweight phytolipids (plant-based oils) tend NOT to cause breakouts unless you’re allergic to them. Ingredients such as Rosehip Seed Oil, Squalane Oil, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, and Sunflower Seed Oil, are all excellent at balancing oily skin and helping to prevent skin dehydration (which can lead to more oil production).

Is oil good for oily skin?

People with oily skin can use the oils. Face oils can help balance skin’s sebum levels by providing necessary moisture, preventing skin from working overtime to produce sebum.

Whether you’re new to facial oils or a pro, pay attention to which ingredients work best for your skin.
