By
November 30, 2023

As the world winds down, your skin awakens to a whole new level of natural repair and regeneration. Sufficient sleep is important to wake up prettier in the morning. Beauty sleep is real and it’s a very common term used by many. Some might think it’s a catchy word however there is a reason why it’s called beauty sleep. We examine the truth behind beauty sleep and the benefits of quality sleep.

The science behind the beauty sleep.

Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining and repairing the entire body. When we sleep our stress hormones (Cortisol) go down and our sleep hormones (Melatonin) go up. During sleep, the skin focuses on cell turnover, collagen production, and other essential skin health functions. These may be reflected in physical appearance which may influence self-perception of beauty. Sleep deprivation can affect the person’s entire body.

A night of poor sleep can lead to many issues like skin, eyes, and mouth.

Wrinkles and fine lines

Insufficient sleep can lead to wrinkles, crowfeet, and frown lines.

Paler skin

Late-night sleep or insufficient sleep leads to many skin issues like poor complexion, dehydration, water loss, and excessive secretion of oil resulting in acne.

Puffy Eyes and dark circles around the eye area

The eye area is more sensitive than the rest of the face and has naturally thin skin.

Hair loss

Stress hormones cause the loss of hair and greasy hair.

The potential benefits of enough sleep

Some of them may reflect in physical appearance like skin and hair. Enough sleep may lead to some of the benefits.

Reduce wrinkles and fine lines –

Skin is made of collagen and elastin which make the skin flexible and elastic. Without enough sleep immune system is weakened which can lead to low-quality and low-strength collagen production as a result health of the skin decreases and lack of elasticity causes wrinkles.

Healthier complexion – At night the skin has the highest level of blood flow and it helps regenerate or repair the damaged skin cells.

Less puffy eyes – Puffy eyes and dark circles under the eye area are a signal of fatigue and lack of sleep. Naturally thin skin or sagging makes the change in the skin color more noticeable.

Healthy Hair – Lack of sleep impacts the stress hormones resulting in excessive sebum production which leads to greasy hair and stress causes the loss of hair. Hair grows in 3 stages – growth, degeneration, and falling out. Stress hormones prevent the growth stage after the falling out stage.

Tips to get more sleep.

Set a schedule – Keep a schedule to go to bed at the same time every day.

Create a healthy environment – Make the environment a dark, peaceful, cool place.

Relax activity – Consider reading or relaxing activity before going to bed.

Stay away from electronics – Before going to bed avoid using the electronics.

Exercise Regularly – Exercise has many benefits including falling asleep and staying asleep.
